My Favorite Wartime Memory: PFC Frank Bellomo, Retired Engineer
We were taking a village in Germany and cleaning out the houses of enemy
soldiers and snipers. I was searching a house and heard noises. I
carefully
entered a room and found 3 Russian displaced persons holding down a young
German
girl and were raping her. She was crying. I fired a shot in the air from
my 45
caliber pistol and yelled at them. They momentarily stopped and motioned
for me
to join them which made me madder than hell! I shouted and motioned for
the girl
to run away..raus mit zee, schnell! They were yelling at me menacingly and
I
fired again over their heads. Made them sit down facing a wall with their
hands
on their heads. I slowly backed toward the door, pulled the pins on 2
grenades
and waited 2 seconds before I rolled them on the floor where there were. I
ran
out of the room and hit the deck. The grenades went off and I walked out
to
check out the next house for snipers.
